Several of these, including past projects, are summarized in the pages on this site.<\/p>\n\n\n<hr>\n\n<h2>Totonac Documentation Project<\/h2>\nThis project is aimed at the documentation of languages in the Totonac branch of the Totonacan language family, spoken in East Central Mexico. It began initially with work on Upper Necaxa Totonac and has since expanded to include intensive work in neighbouring languages, Zuhuateutla Totonac, Coahutil\u00e1n Totonac, and Tepezintla\/Ozomatl\u00e1n Totonac. The project has conducted more limited field work in several other Totonac communities.\n<ul>\n \t<li>field visits beginning in 1998<\/li>\n \t<li>SSHRC funding since 2001<\/li>\n \t<li>students involved in fieldwork since 2003<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nThe UNT project has been working on\n<ul>\n \t<li>practical and academic dictionaries<\/li>\n \t<li>electronic lexical database with sound files and moprhological analyses<\/li>\n \t<li>reference grammar and morphological model<\/li>\n \t<li>analyzed texts, paper and audio archives<\/li>\n \t<li>L1 acquisition<\/li>\n \t<li>historical reconstruction<\/li>\n \t<li>language displacement and ideologies<\/li>\n \t<li>collection of ethnobotanical materials<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nMore information:\n\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.arts.ualberta.ca\/~totonaco\">Upper Necaxa Totonac Project Website<\/a>\n<ul>\n \t<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Project director: David Beck<\/li>\n \t<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Researchers: Michelle Garcia-Vega, Devin Moore, Rachel McGraw, Conor Snoek<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<hr>\n\n<h2>T. M. Hess Collection<\/h2>\n<em>Thom Hess in his office at UVic in 2001<\/em>\n\nThe Thomas Melville Hess Collection consists of documentary materials on the indigenous languages of the Pacific Northwest recorded by the eminent linguist Thom Hess have been donated to Special Collections at UofA. It includes extensive audio recordings and field notes on Lushootseed, as well as other Salishan and Wakashan materials.\n\nIn the course of this project\n<ul>\n \t<li>tapes will be digitized<\/li>\n \t<li>typed transcripts&nbsp;will be digitized and paired with recordings<\/li>\n \t<li>materials will be analyzed and analyses included with documentary materials<\/li>\n \t<li>on-line access will be provided to some materials<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n \t<li>Project director: David Beck<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<hr>\n\n<h2>Lushootseed Project<\/h2>\nThe Salishan language Lushootseed, spoken in the Puget Sound area of Washington State and the Upper Skagit River, has only a handful of fluent elder speakers remaining, yet \u2014 thanks largely to the efforts of Thomas M. Hess and his teachers and collaborators \u2014 the language has been well documented, though much of the material remains in unpublished or inaccessible form.\n\nThis project seeks to compile and analyze the exisiting materials. Currently, we are working on:\n<ul>\n \t<li>interlinearized searchable corpus of ca. 5,300 lines created from transcribed material<\/li>\n \t<li>XML database of lexical suffixes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nThe final goal of this project is the creation of a reference grammar and a collection of analyzed texts.<!-- \/wp:post-content -->\n<ul>\n \t<li>Project director: David Beck<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<!-- wp:image {\"id\":584} -->\n<p class=\"wp-block-image\"><\/p>\n\n\n<hr>\n\n<h2>Totonac Ethnobotany<\/h2>\n<div>\n<div id=\"m_-6576841582270391873article\" role=\"article\">\n<div>\n\nAn essential part of language documentation is the recording of traditional ecological knowledge, one of the earliest casualties of language displacement. In June of 2015, we began the collection and determination of plant species listed in the&nbsp;Upper Necaxa Totonac Dictionary&nbsp;. The web pages on this site represent 249 collections made in the Necaxa Valley, accompanied by ethnobotanical data provided by our consultants, primarily Longino Barrag\u00e1n Sampayo (Ch.), Porfirio Sampayo Mac\u00edn (Pt.), and Marcelo Mendoza Orega (Pt.). With less than a handful of speakers remaining for both languages, the project seeks to gather as much material as possible from current speakers and from legacy materials.\n\n<hr>\n\n<h2>Maskwac\u00ees Plains Cree Project<\/h2>\nThis project combines the creation of applications with research on language strucure and acquisition, through, for example, monitoring the behavior of learners using the applicaiions. The project also involves the collection and digitization of textual resources into corpora, both as a means of tool-testing and as a research objective of its own.\n\n<hr>\n\n<h2>S\u00e1liban Languages Project<\/h2>\nThis project focuses on the S\u00e1liban language Family (S\u00e1liba, Piaroa, &amp; Mako) of Venezuela and Colombia. The main goals are to document and describe these little-known and endangered languages in collaboration with the speaker communities.\n\n<hr>\n\n<h2>Language Documentation Projects &amp; Textbook Development<\/h2>\nThis project involves the creation of a Dene Dh\u00e1h dictionary, Dene Dh\u00e1ah digital narratives corpus, H\u00e4n dictionary, Stoney (Northern &amp; Southern dialect) dictionary, and Beaver dictionary.\n\n<hr>\n\n<h2>&nbsp;\u0294ay\u0294aj\u030cu\u03b8\u0259m (a.k.a. Comox-Sliammon) documentation<\/h2>\n\u0294ay\u0294aj\u030cu\u03b8\u0259m is traditionally spoken by members of the Tla&#8217;amin, Homalco, Klahoose, and K&#8217;\u00f3moks First Nations along the Northern Georgia Strait in British Columbia. The four sister nations are partnering with linguists from the University of Alberta, University of British Columbia, and University of Victoria on two major documentary projects: a dictionary and a teaching grammar.
